Increase Your Value By Becoming A Certified Medical Coder

A medical coder that makes the extra effort to become a certified medical coder will find that doing so pays off in numerous ways. Medical coders that have obtained their certification will have an easier time landing a job. They will also be able to command more pay then those that are not certified. Certification shows prospective employers that a person is serious about their profession and that they are willing to go the extra mile to prove it. It is also a pretty good indicator that a person knows that they are doing.

Doctors, just like all workers, want to get paid for their work in a timely manner. Because many of their patients have health insurance, they are unable to until their visits have been documented and submitted to the insurance companies for payment.  Medical coders play an important role in this process. They make sure that doctors are paid for the work that they do by properly coding their health records. When coders are adept at what they do, the amount of mistakes made is generally decreased. The fewer mistakes made, the faster a doctor gets paid, which makes everyone happy.

In order to become a certified medical coder, an exam of some type is generally always required. Some exams are very lengthy and most are extremely comprehensive, ensuring that a coder really knows their stuff. The more challenging the exam or certification process is, the more weight is given to it.

There are a number of medical coding certification agencies. Individuals who wish to become certified will have a choice about which organization they become certified through. The most notable and well-respected certification agencies are the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), The Professional Association of Healthcare Coding Specialists (PAHC), The American Health Information Association (AHIMA), The National Cancer Registrars Associations (NCRA) and The Board of Medical Specialty Coding (BMSC).

The outlook for jobs in the medical coding industry is good. As the population ages, more and more people will need healthcare. Doctor’s visits will need to be coded and insurance companies billed. This is where a certified medical coder comes in. He or she will work alongside doctors to make sure that they are reimbursed for their work in an accurate and timely manner.

Medical coding pays well and is a job a person can be proud of. It also offers a lot of flexibility. A decent percentage of certified medical coders are able to work from home, which many consider to be one of the best things about the profession.
